Why Beady Pool?

The glorious Isles of Scilly are an archipelago of small 'mediterranean' islands set in the Atlantic Ocean off the tip of Cornwall.

These beautiful islands are famous for their climate, clear seas, fine white sand and extraordinary light. Only five are inhabited.  The most south-westerly island, St Agnes, boasts granite tors and secluded  coves with crystal clear waters.  One of these coves in Wingletang Bay is known as 'Beady Pool'.

My family are Cornish and when I was young, my parents took me on holiday to the island of St Agnes.  On the low tide in dazzling sunshine we searched for hours through the rock pools of 'Beady Pool' for small glass beads that were part of a cargo from a 17th century Dutch sailing vessel shipwrecked off the island en-route from Amsterdam to Lisbon.  Great excitement and shouts of joy arose each time a minute terracotta glass lined bead was revealed amongst the grains of sand.

These 'Beady Pool' treasures remained hidden
in a matchbox for around twenty-five years until recently.  We found the box and not long after I started making jewellery again.

With such happy memories of St Agnes and the magical Isles of Scilly, I decided to call my business 'Beady Pool'.
Many of the gorgeous hand-made lampwork glass beads I use in my jewellery remind me of Scilly and reflect the images of sea, sand and extraordinary light .
